Cheap IR sensor resources

Hello!

I am looking for a cheap resource for IR sensors. I am making an Arduino VacBot, and I am on a limited budget. From what I have found, they all cost somewhere around $25.00. If someone knows where to purchase cheap IR sensors in the United States or Canada, that would be great!

Also, is it cheaper to make an IR sensor yourself? I have found a resource on how to make an IR sensor, but it has no estimates.

Thanks!

P.S. this is Ben_OT in new account for those who previously responded to my posts.

It would help if you post a link to something you have already found.

What are these sensors supposed to sense?

Hey! Thanks for replying.

I will provide a link below.

The sensor detects distance. I am going to use one on a Vacuum robot I am attempting to make.
More specifically, I am using the sensor to gauge the edge of a floor, where the robot is supposed to turn around, to avoid falling off the edge, and destroying itself. One could call such a sensor a "cliff detector."

Thanks,

Actually, forget the part about cliff detection. I think I will need an Ultrasonic sensor for that. I'll use the IR sensor for distance detection to allow the robot to see where it is in relation to solid objects.

Pololu has an excellent collection of IR sensors.

eBay is full of those type of sensors, here's one:

I doubt you can make it yourself for less.

Hi!

Thanks for helping me. I appreciate it!
