I decided to buy in 8 ten meter rope lights all with eu plugs except one I bought as mistake which was american, along with an 8 channel solid state relay... which will ultimately be based on the values from a frequency ic chip, msgeq7.
But, the US model is yet to arrive...
If these are capacitor fed power supplies am I right in thinking I should simply replace the capacitor ?
If it's a switchmode change the resistors (doubts it though)
(And obviously replacing all the 120v caps to 300v and any other 240v rated components)
I'll be ripping them open to find out the difference and taking photos... it's the 100 LED 10m version with a little grey box with different modes you can change 5 $ on ebay. .
Modifying cheap mains supplies sounds like a very dangerous and inadvisable approach.
Find out what the strings of LEDs need and source a reputable supply that can power them
all, and do all the switching on the low-voltage side. Then you haven't taken on responsibility
for mains power supply safety.
Either that or use unmodified light sets with SSRs in which case they need to be the right
voltage.
I agree with trashing the U.S. lights... If it's a switchmode power supply, it might work, or the power supply or LEDs might die immediately, or the LEDs might be over-bright and burn-out over a short period of time, or... the power supply might over-heat and start a fire later when you are not watching it.
I don't want to over-worry you, but a couple of other unrelated (non-dangerous) things that might happen...
Solid state relays don't always shut-off completely with a light load. So, the LEDs might stay on or glow dimly when they are supposed to be off.
A switchmode power supply might have a few milliseconds (or several milliseconds) delay when powered-on.
The output capacitor in the power supply may cause the LEDs to "dim-off" rather than "snap off".
