Check if computer outputs sound

Hi,

Just got myself the arduino starter kit and worked through the different projects.
Now I want to build a small project with a simple 3.5 earjack plug. I want to detect if there is any sound being played from my PC.
What are the tools that I need to detect noise from the PC? Any pushes in the right direction will be greatly appreciated.

If you actually want to know if the computer outputs sound, a speaker or headphone will quickly tell you.

And then, if you want to build your own device, and it doesn't work, at least you will know if it is the computer's fault.
