ive just been speaking to a supplier friend of mine and he has pointed out a new RF product that will work up to 16 KM range and work with arduino. you have to buy 2 and pair them up.
but i cant wait to try these babies
Looks interesting but the data sheet on that site seems to be for a different module to the one pictured.
