Choosing the right LEDs for a project.

Hi, I'm looking to make a panel which will contain over 100 segmented white LEDs (that is each LED will have a little compartment around it to segregate and direct the light, similar to a 7seg display) with various colored acrylic sheets over the top (acting as filters). The aim is that when a single LED lights up, it provides consistent illumination across the plastic. Am I right in thinking that a wide angle LED will provide a much more consistent spread of light than a regular led? I've considered using standard LEDs and diffusing them myself, but it's a laborious and imprecise task.

If anyone could offer some opinion that would be fantastic. Cheers.

Maybe SMD hi-bright?

Cheers for the suggestion, something like this? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/50-Surface-Mount-LED-White-0805-SMT-LED-/120701400823
