Circling a building.. what are the options..

I was digging around the Sparkfun site and came across their Autonomous Vehicle Competition.. Entrants have to circle a large building..

Aside from GPS.. what kind of technology would people have implemented in the past to achieve the actual navigation?

Radar, sonar, laser tracking, stereoscopic cameras. Anything and everything you can think of that can be used to give the vehicle a since of its surroundings. These things have to see obstacles and gauge the distances between themselves and the objects and figure out the best way around them. These vehicles have multiple computer racks in them to keep all this sorted out.
