Citizen science with DIY sensors and tools

The most recent Economist has a great article on citizen or "punk" science, describing how people all over the world are using simple equipment to gather accurate data on environmental insults, effectively countering government secrecy and the anti-science movement.

There are excellent leads to DIY construction articles on internet connected Arduino Geiger counters, fluorescence microscopes, spectrometers with DVD diffraction gratings, tools for collection of plastic contaminants in seawater, balloon mapping, etc.

Thanks!
