Cloud Editor not able to connect/detect Uno on Chromebook

Hello,
I'm not sure how to use this forum and am an amateur to all of this but here I go.

I'm a teacher and we have been using Arduino Uno and Chromebook for the past two years. I was able to find the Arduino Create for Education app using this forum and it has been working well.

However, there is now a new update to Arduino Cloud and now student laptops are no longer able to connect or detect the device.

I tried to find a solution and came to this: Use Arduino with Chromebook

Is there anything that I can do? Is it possible to use the old web editor on student Chromebooks anymore? Is there a new app similar to Arduino Create for Education that is needed for the new web editor?

Any help would be much appreciated.

I too am a teacher and have the same issue and have discussed the issue with out IT department. We came to the conclusion that the student Chromebooks do not have access to the com ports; therefore, do not recognize the connected boards. If and when we discover a solution I will post it here on this thread.

Hello,
Thank you for your response, I see it is not just happening for my school. We found outside alternatives and are testing to see which best works for us.
Currently this is the most promising. https://duino.app/
I am disappointed that Arduino has such a hard time with Chromebooks because it locks out many students from coding.
Best of luck, I will test things with my student and post again to let you know how things go.

Hi @cwei-steam.

Are they official UNO R3 boards manufactured by Arduino? I ask because currently the new Cloud Editor only supports uploading to the boards listed here when using a ChromeOS machine:

https://support.arduino.cc/hc/en-us/articles/360014779899-Boards-compatible-with-the-Cloud-Editor#cloud-editor-on-chromebook

Support for uploading to 3rd party derivatives of those boards that use a general purpose USB to serial bridge chip (e.g., WCH CH340, Silicon Labs 210x) has not been implemented in the new Cloud Editor.

But official UNO R3 boards are supported, so if you are experiencing this problem with official boards then there is some other cause.

That explains it! We are using a 3rd party derivative from the Two Bit Circus Foundation. That must be the reason why. Is the new Cloud Editor going to support these in the future?

Yes they will fix the problem soon according to this form:

Hello again @cwei-steam. Support has now been restored for uploading to 3rd party derivatives of the officially supported boards from Arduino Cloud Editor on ChromeOS machines.

I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused you.

Please give it a try and let us know if you still have any problems.
