Arduino_Motor_Shield__L293___SKU__DRI0001_-DFRobot has code for that shield.
Get rid of the battery. Replace it by 6 AA batteries or a decent 9V power supply (e.g. a 9V wall wart).

The best thing would be a copy of the Arduino Cookbook and power supply or a box of batteries. Check this link: New In The Forum - #5 by gilshultz
