Code that "breaks" arduino

How can this be ok.
Just for our curiosity, can you explain how having shorts is between wires within the cable is ok?

I guess I should clarify when I say "short." What I mean is at one end of the cable the wires converge into one connector, effectively "shorting." This is okay since it's just a power supply and ground connection.

To be more specific:

It's a 4-wire cable, two black wires and 2 red wires. At the one "close end" the two blacks are crimped together and the two reds are crimped together. At the other end, the "far end" is a 4 pin "block" connector, 1 pin for each wire. On the close end, the black wires come from GND and the red wires from +24V. The far end supplies two separate circuits, each requiring +24V and GND. Enough power is supplied at the close end to accommodate for the far end.
