Ok so I have a 3D printer which uses an ATmega2560 board. Recently I don't know what happened with my computer's drivers but when i connect the ATmega2560 to my computer it shows up as "USB Serial Port" under other devices in Device Manager
. I've already tried reinstalling Arduino IDE to reinstall the drivers and restarted my computer multiple times but to no avail. This forum is really my last hope at this point.
- Double click on USB Serial Port
- Click the "Details" tab
- Select "Hardware Ids" from the dropdown menu.
- Post what's shown in the "Value" field in a reply here.
This is what i got

OK, that means your board uses the FTDI FT232 USB chip. You will find that driver in the drivers subfolder of the Arduino IDE installation folder.
So i tried doing this

But this happened

Windows 10 is really picky about drivers and I know the FTDI driver Arduino bundles is pretty old. So that may be the cause of this error, rather than a corruption or tapmering. You could probably find more info by researching that specific error message. There is a way to restart your computer with driver signing enforcement turned off so you can install drivers without it.
You can probably get an updated FT232 driver from the FTDI manufacturer's website. Note there have been some problems with the newer FTDI drivers intentionally bricking counterfeit FT232 chips. I'm not sure if they're still doing that.
I've already tried looking for FTDI drivers and installing them. And even when trying to run dpinst-amd64.exe from the latest arduino zip package, not a single one of the drivers is installed...
Did you try a driver from FTDIchip.com, the manufacturer?
Yea i've tried both setup and .zip of the Windows VCP drivers
I am running Windows 10 64-bit version 1709 on my Dell laptop.
The FTDI chip shows up under Ports in Device Manager and, yes, it shows up as a USB Serial Port.
Windows 10 automatically found the driver for it.

Problem is, my computer can't detect it as a COM port

This does not help you. And don't worry, we believe you if you say that the IDE does not show the port.
My experience is the same as ieee488. I got a freshly installed Win10 Enterprise 64 bit (company) laptop. Installed the 1.8.5 IDE and tested all the boards that I have. FTDI (on a sparkfun redboard) was straight away recognized and windows installed the drivers; 16U2 also worked out-of-the-box as well. CH340 drivers I had to install manually (as usual).
And the Leonardo also worked.
Check your PC for viruses and other crap; the install error that you get might be an indication and that message is why it does not work.

Exactly as described in page 29 of
Read it!
.
Alright so i read the manual, and turns out my computer doesn't only have 1 problem. I'm not able to see the windows update screen because it just keeps loading. And when i googled for solutions to that i was told to use the troubleshooter, which guess what? Also doesn't work...
