com ports

Arduino is on port 3, only 9 hours of frustration to get driver installed. Arduino IDE thinks com 1 and aparrently is not scanning the com ports as stated. Windows 8 on HP laptop, Atrduino Leonardo board. All software downloaded and installed today, nothing outdated. How do I get the IDE to find com 3? nothing under the tool menu cooperates.

It may not be finding it because the proper drivers are not installed, if a generic USB Serial driver is installed, the device will start, however the computer will not initiate the com port.

Right click the start menu, and click Device Manager

Find Ports (COM & LPT) open it and post a screenshot here.

The first thing to do is to learn NOT to waste time by stupidly posting in the wrong forum.

The second is to learn to read the instructions, such as the ones in the trouble shooting/getting started forum. You know the one it’s just above this one in the list of forums!

It's not so hard to tell who has been actively helping people here for long.

Are you saying that the arduino connection is not showing up in the list of serial connections in the IDE under Tools > Ports?
