Comms over the 'mains'

I was contemplating developing some intelligent mains switches for use around the house but did not want the expense of xbee wireless comms.
Comms over the mains wiring would seem the ideal choice and I was wondering if any of you have successfully implemented this ? I was only contemplating a simple protocol, nothing specific at this stage.

I would appreciate any suggestions or pointers you might have to offer. I have some experience switching 240V mains and am aware of the risks and dangers involved.

Thanks
Tim

You might want to read up on the X-10 protocol and equipment. Sends short data commands during the zero crossings of the AC mains.

Thanks, I will look it up.
