Communicating between arduino and computer with xbee

I am trying to build a project where a computer and arduino send commands to one another using series 1 xbee modules. Using the serial monitor is it possible for an xbee explorer with attached xbee module that is connected to a computer to send and receive commands from an arduino that has an attached xbee module? Would for example the xbee explorer in this kit allow that? http://www.sparkfun.com/products/9897

It is possible to send and receive strings of characters. Those strings of characters can then be interpreted as commands.

Yes.

The only hard part is configuring the XBees, and that is not hard at all. Just ignore the BS that digi puts out that says that they don't need configuring.

Set PAN ID, MY, and DL on each Arduino. Set MY on one to DL on the other, with neither value being 0 or FFFF.
