Do I still need the MAX232 chip in this condition?
Re-read what I wrote. The voltage level can be 5V or 12V or 25V AND the level is inverted. This means that what the Arduino sees as bits will be the spaces and what it sees as spaces will be the bits. That will make no sense to the Arduino.
