If it's not explained in the text, you better forget about that text.
Communication is usually bound to digital pins, if that helps.
COMMUNICATIONS is labelled on the board.
They are digital pins.
They are the Rx and Tx pins for the 4 serial ports.
If you don't need to use the "communications" pins for communication you can use them as normal digital I/O pins.
It is wise to treat pins 0 and 1 as "special" because they are the Rx and Tx that is used for communicating with the PC over the USB cable.
