Comparing hardware sensor performance?

Hello everyone.

I am trying to prototype a tracker robot that follows an IR beacon (remote). I am going to buy the necessary components and an arduino Uno. However, I know there are many sensors out there from different disrtributors with different performance outputs. How do I go about comparing products? Realistically, I would want the highest resolution possible from within <=10ft

If you are looking for angular resolution, that is given by the manufacturer's datasheet which requires you to know the exact part number, which unfortunately is often missing from the cheap modules you find on ebay etc.

Perhaps do a Google search for 'narrow angle IR sensor' and see what turns up.

How do I go about comparing products?

  1. read the data sheets of the products you may be interested in carefully, and create a short-list of those that fulfil your specifications and fit your budget.
  2. buy one or two of each short-listed product, and put them to the test.
  3. settle on the one that performs best in your application.
