I used brute force and bent the pins on the lcd keypad shield so that they did not enter the sensor shield.I was lucky and they did not break when I bent them back.
Wow. I'm amazed that worked.
I'm wondering if you had a bad solder joint or connector that is now making better
contact after the flexing.
