You would be better to revert to 1.6.5 for older obsolete OS.

1.8.12 is known to have some issues with older OS

Hi ballscrewbob, tried on windows10 Blink set to flash on/off every second. When I plug in Arduino it comes on and flashes every 5secs.
I tried running the Blink every second program it will verify but I get this message during uploading.

Arduino still blinks every 5secs.

Make sure you have selected the port of your Arduino board from the Tools > Port menu.

Sometimes the port will be labeled with the board name in the menu. Other times it will not. If you don’t know which port is your Arduino board, you can find it like this:

  • Unplug your Arduino board from the computer.
  • Tools > Port
  • Note the ports, if any, listed in the menu.
  • Close the Tools menu. The ports list is only updated when the Tools menu is re-opened, so this step is essential.
  • Plug your Arduino board into the computer.
  • Tools > Port - The new port listed in the menu is your Arduino board.

Hi, this is the latest error report, I tried several times clicking port but very frustrating I have tried several versions also same result disappointed that Arduino has been releasing versions so glitchy I know I am a total novice and its a learning curve on the bright side my typing is a bit fasterrrrr, haha, Many thanks.

Hi everyone, I managed to get Blink Led uploaded ran it and changed timing of Led seems good.
The problem appeared to be driver related for usb com port.
I am using version 1.5 on Vista as I could not get it to run at all on Windows10 as I said before just learning
so I will be trying quite a few of the kits in this Mega2560 Project.
I would like to thank everyone for their help and patience as I will undoubtably be back for help in the future.
