Compile Error Message

I am using an UNO R3 boad as an interface between a computer running a slot car lap counting program, and a slot car track. The board is connected via USB and recognized by the laptop running Windows 10, which assigned to it port COM7.

The sketch I'm tying to compile has been successfully compiled on other UNO R3 boards multiple times before. I'm getting the following error message with a board I just purchased:

I verified the directories listed in the error message exist on the laptop. Any idea why I'm getting this error message? I bought an R3 board last year, put it in storage, then got the above error message. I just received a new board yesterday, and result was the same message.

Can anyone assist with a proposed solution?

When you see a "No such file or directory" error it almost always means you need to install the library that contains the missing file.

Often the code you're compiling will come with documentation (either a comment or separate document) that tells you where to get the library dependencies.

Note that libraries may have dependencies on other libraries.

In other cases the author of the code will not have been so kind and you'll need to go on a hunt for the missing library.

A good place to start is the Arduino IDE's Library Manager:

  • Sketch > Include Library > Manage Libraries...
  • In the "Filter your search..." box, type some keywords you have gleaned from the missing file name.
  • Scroll through the results for the right library. Click on it.
  • Click "Install".
  • Wait for installation to finish.
  • Click "Close".
  • Try compiling your code again.

If you have no luck in Library Manager then load up your favorite search engine and do a search for the missing filename. You will often get multiple results. If you have a lot of results you might add "arduino" as an additional search keyword. I will usually prefer results on github.com since that is where most Arduino libraries are hosted and downloading from there is fast and easy. In some cases there will be multiple libraries that contain the given filename and you'll need to do some evaluation to determine which seems the most appropriate, then try it out. After downloading the library you found you'll need to install it. This requires a different process than the Library Manager installation. You will find instructions here:

....forgot to mention: I've tried this on two separate laptops, both running Windows 10. Both laptops have successfully compiled sketches to other Uno R3 boards.

The answer remains the same. If you correctly install the FastLED library, you won't get this error.

When the Arduino IDE is compiling a program it has no physical knowledge of the board the program will be uploaded to - indeed you can compile a program without have any Arduino connected to the PC. All of the board knowledge for the compile process comes from the board selection in the Tools menu.

In other words, the error is not a function of the board you just purchased. It has arisen for some other reason - as suggested by @pert
