By realizing that it's not the compiling that's in error, it is what is being compiled.

Google "C++ tutorial" and do a C++ tutorial.

It's premature to say that without seeing the error; for example, he could be using 1.8.1 or earlier on Windows XP, or his AV program could be mistakenly interfering with the compilation process, or he could have gotten his Arduino IDE installation into one of several other possible bad states that cause all attempts to compile to fail - of course, it's most likely that the problem is with the code he's attempting to compile, in which case the compiler error will throw errors pointing out the line where it realized there was a problem.
