configure HC-05 command mode

ok, So I have watched a lot of youtube videos, and am stuck.

I see there are a number of ways to connect the HC-05 Bluetooth to the UNO.
No matter what I seem to do, I get stuck when trying to enter manual commands.

I can type in all the AT commands I want, and nothing in the monitor.

As per the last video I watched:
an empty sketch uploaded
tx-tx
rx-rx
grnd-grnd
vcc-5v
en-3.5v

I held the button while powering up

monitor set to
38400 baud
both nl & cr
com port matching to the board

Tx>Rx and Rx<Tx
No amount of holding the button down will save you if a receiver is not receiving from a transmitter.
