configuring xbee without explorer

Hi,
I am working at a project at school and I am having trouble configuring the xbee's. I am using an xbee pro with an arduino uno and a sparkfun xbee shield (https://www.sparkfun.com/products/10854). I do not have an xbee explorer or a usb to xbee board. Is there any way for me to configure the xbee's to communicate with each other? I've read that I need to give the receiver address to the transmitter and the other way around. Is there any way to do that with the parts that I have. I have been trying for hours with no luck.

Yes. Simply remove the AtMega chip from the Arduino. Make sure you note which way it is installed, so you can put it back after you finish configuring the XBees.
