This is very much a long shot, but I just wanted to see in anyone had solved this problem or a similar one. I have a mailbox notifier that uses a D1 Mini Pro, and would like to be able to located it in an area that's way beyond my wifi range, and where all the other wifi networks within range are secured - except for a nearby 2.4GHz Cox Hotspot. It shows up with an SSID of CoxWifi, with no password. Since I am a Cox internet customer, I can use this.
However, when you attempt to connect to the network on a phone or computer, it goes through some protocol that asks for your Cox user id and password. I have no idea how this would work with a D1 Mini, if it's possible at all.
I need to confirm this, but I believe once you've authenticated a device that way, it's good for a year. So I thought it might be possible to authenticate once with an old phone, then change the D1 Mini's MAC address to spoof the phone's MAC address. Then the Hotspot might just let it connect. But I don't know how that's done. It may require saving something like a token or certificate on the device.
If it matters, the ultimate destination is https://maker.ifttt.com. I realize there are other ways to approach this using cellular data, but since I already have this device built, I'd like to use it if that's possible.
Edit: I was wrong about the Cox Hotspot being 2.4GHz. I could have sworn I saw that, but it's actually 5GHz only. So I think thats a nevermind as far as the D1 Mini is concerned.
