connecting antenna to waterproof enclosure

Hi

Not sure if this is the appropriate subforum for this post so please move if not.

I am using this waterproof enclosure for a project. The interior of the enclosure will include a microcontroller which has a LoRa radio connected. I would like to connect an antenna to the radio (via a UFL connector) but so the antenna is outside of waterproof enclosure (so as to maximise radio strength).

Is anyone aware of a good method of connecting an external antenna to the enclosure? The enclosure comes with cable glands but I don't think that an antenna would fit through there.

Thanks

Personally I would use a bulkhead connector like this one and change the antenna to one I can use with this connector.

I would start with the antenna inside the enclosure. It likely doesn't bother the signal much, if at all, giving a good enough signal to your receiver.

Think about a cell phone. Some of them have 5 internal antennas... all working perfectly well.

If the housing is non metallic, you will achieve little by moving the AERIAL* out of it. If it is metallic or you are going to run additional cable, then there are many types of bulkhead connectors available. You might like to look at SMA or SMB as used on routers etc.

  • One receives RF with an aerial. Antennae are parts of an insect that are not designed to receive RF.

Tell that to J.D. Kraus.

It's not written in English though, it's in some funny yank language.
