Hi, I am trying to extract the hex code on my Arduino Leonardo. I have tried resetting the board before running the command below:

> "C:\Users\VICTUS\AppData\Local\Arduino15\packages\arduino\tools\avrdude\6.3.0-arduino17/bin/avrdude" "-CC:\Users\VICTUS\AppData\Local\Arduino15\packages\arduino\tools\avrdude\6.3.0-arduino17/etc/avrdude.conf" -v -V -patmega32u4 -cavr109 "-PCOM3" -b57600 -D "-Uflash:r:C:\Users\VICTUS\Desktop\Backup\_S4AFirmware.hex:i"

but all i got is just

> Connecting to programmer: .avrdude: butterfly\_recv(): programmer is not responding
>
> avrdude: butterfly\_recv(): programmer is not responding

any kind of help is appreciated thankyou

Hi @yar9901. Please try this experiment and then report back with the results:

1. Connect the Arduino board to your computer with the USB cable.
2. Press and release the reset button on the Arduino board.

Now please [reply](https://meta.discourse.org/t/discourse-new-user-guide/96331#replying-11) here on the forum topic with the answer to the following question:

- Do you see the LED marked " **L**" on the board pulse after performing the above instructions?

Thanks for taking the time to post an update with your solution! I'm glad it is working now.

The reset is needed to activate the Leonardo's bootloader, which allows AVRDUDE to read the program binary from the microcontroller's flash memory. The bootloader only remains active for a short time after you press the reset button (the pulsing "L" LED is the indicator of the bootloader running), so you must run the `avrdude` command during that time window.
