Hi,
I am in a band
I need to control the volume of my bass amp ( a knob)

what are the basic things I need?
any general guidance would be appreciated

Not enough information. There are 1000's of bass amps, some use thermionic valves, some are analog
solid state, some are digital, class-D, all sorts of possibilities for how the volume control works.
So provide full information on the amplifier please...
You can get remote control at 50 ft with a number of devices: wifi, bluetooth, IR, radio signal, etc.
You have 2 options I can think of for controlling the bass:
Mechanical; use servo motor to turn bass knob on amplifier
Servo can turn 180 degrees. Put circular frame around servo arm and use rubber band
wrapped between servo and bass control knob.
Electrical; There are chips that can be controlled electronically to adjust the resistance across the device.
This would require a bit of wiring in the bass amplifier. "Use Arduino inside Amp to control.
Guess I'm assuming the Bass control is an analog potentiometer (old-school).

More to the point you are assuming there isn't 100's of volts involved. Until we know what we are
dealing with its just speculation.
Ah, maybe true but now I notice he's talking about a knob. So controlling the servo approach is still on the table.

A very long stick perhaps?
