Control Potentiometer Output with Push Buttons

Hope I'm in the right topic lmao but does anyone know if it is possible to program a Potentiometer though the simple use of an Up/Down programmed Push Buttons?

The idea is that I have a DIY EV car and it has a 3 speed toggle switch controlling the amount of voltage going to the motor which I found to be just acting as a potentiometer, so is it possible to change these speeds, going up and down, via Push Buttons? Something about increment/decrement a value perhaps? And the output wires have to be the same as if its a potentiometer, so the three (VCC, GND and Signal). This is for a school project so help would be massively appreciated
