Controling LEDs

Can someone please advise me, I am building a model and want to control multiple LED diodes Chasing and various patterns. I need to know what board I need and if I require anything else.

You need a Mega because anything else will not have the memory. You also need to use an addressable LED strip like a WS2812b, sometimes called Neopixels.

Yes but it will affect how you wire things up and make it more complex. You can achieve the same effect with an LED strip and software..

I really like the Teensy 3.2. It has a 32-bit ARM Cortex-M4 that runs up to 96MHz, 64KB of RAM and 256KB of flash. I/O is 5V tolerant.
With a PCB size of 36x18mm, it's even smaller than the Arduino Nano.
Arduino compatibility is excellent, never had any problems.

It supports up to 4,000 Neopixels and uses DMA to minimize CPU load when driving them.
