Controlling 3-wire chasing rope lights

Hi I’m new to the forum and I tried to search for this subject but didn’t find much. I’m a MFA student at Hunter College in NYC and I’m interested to program a piece of work that I’ve been running manually. Essentially what I would like to do is control several sets of 3-wire non-led chasing rope lights. Are the Arduino boards something i would want to use to control these rope lights, or am I barking up the wrong tree. If these boards would work for me, does anyone have an example of a set up that I could read about?

How are you running them manually? What does running them mean? Turning them on and off using switches?

What voltage and current draw are these lights? Do you have a link to them?

They can probably be automated, using an Arduino, but we need a bit more information.

Basically to run them, I've been manually switching the pre-set functions nob and then the speed nob to create a longer "light show". The functionality of these two nobs is what I'd like to have the ability to recreate through programing. Would this be possible?

Ok so I've spent a little more time trying to figure out what it is I want to do: So controlling my rope lights is this box https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B4SUbDi_-OkVYjM3MThjYjYtYmQ2OC00YWIyLWE5ZGQtNDM4YmZlN2EwZGQ2&hl=en&authkey=CKeQ620 On the underside it says ac100-120v 50-60hz, 8a, 960w maximum loading length 50m (150 feet of light rope). On the outside there is the power switch, two indicator lights and three knobs which switch the pots. What I'm interested to know is it possible to connect an arduino board to the wires that are connected to the pots to simulated turning the nobs?
