Controlling a DC motor with external battery using a MOFSET an diode

I've been stuck on this, especially getting the diode in the design. Someone said I need to put it in parallel but I'm having a blasted time figuring this out.

Can someone show me a breadboard on how to do this? I don't want to use a delay or NPN tranny
