Controlling an External Heaters Power with an Arduino

Hi,

I am looking to use an Arduino to create an emergency stop that would kill the power of an external molten metal heater. The Arduino would also incorporate a timer to turn the heater off after an extended period of time. Is the only way to do this to cut into the power cord of the heater and route the power through a relay?

How much current does this draw? I'm never a fan of cutting power cords maybe you can make a little separate relay box that you can plug the heater into? Then you can use for other projects too and nothing needs to be modified.
