Controlling Arduino with other programs/inputs

Hello,
I am working on a project for my collage and i am stuck at an important part

I finally figured how to control x2 servos with arduino but that was not what i was looking for..
At the moment I'm working on a project that tracks moving object and shots at it.

I need to know how can i control the servos on arduino using other programs like possessing and matlab (image possessing to be exact)
like when some thing moves or air is hot or there are noises around then the servos start working.

I recently knew about arduino so i am not a professional in it yet..

I found alot of subjects and projects about tracking but none of them shows me how to control arduino via other programs..

a link or video or example will be more than enough..

Most people that want to turn the Arduino into a mindless moron use Firmata.

As for the external programs, they just need to send the desired servo commands to the arduino. There are programs and setups like below that might be of interest for your project.

Hmm, I'm thinking garden pest control 8) Install 1 at opposite corners, keep the woodchucks and rabbits and deer out o)
