I hope this is OK to post here, but I've been working on a project that I think might be interesting and/or useful for others. I blogged about it as I went, and have gathered together all links into one page on my (not-for-profit, totally-advertisement-free) website. http://www.smolloy.com/professional/microcontrollers-mini-computers-and-more/
EPICS is a control system that is typically used in national labs for giant particle accelerators and other very large-scale systems. Despite its reputation as a large-scale system, I think that the wide (and super-cheap) availability of Arduinos, Raspberry Pis, etc., mean that it could really help smaller facilities -- university labs, test-stands, etc. I actually started this project to teach myself EPICS, but became more and more convinced of its usefulness beyond national labs as I worked on it.
I'm really not sure if these kind of "hey-I-built-a-thing---do-you-think-it's-cool?" posts are welcome here. Please let me know if not.
Hopefully this is useful/interesting to you.
Thanks for reading.
