Controlling DC motors with a joystick

My goal is to control a set of motors with a joystick. I am currently using the adafruit motorshield to control four motors but I am unable to find any sketches that will use a joystick to control them with the shield. I wish to control both speed and direction and am only using the x-axis of the joystick to do this. If any knows where I can find code or if they have one they can share it would be great. As you can probably tell I have absolutely no experience writing code expect for what i have learned over the last couple of weeks.
