Controlling fans

Hey all, I currently do not own any Arduinos, however I do have an older Raspberry Pi Model B (512mb version in case that helps)

I installed two 80mm fans in a guitar tube amp of mine, as it was getting extremely hot without them, to a point in which it made me uncomfortable. The fans are currently hooked up to an old PC power supply, running 24/7, which is a bit of a waste...

Now, I would like to automate the fans in such a way that, when I turn the amplifier on, the fans turn on as well, but when the amp is turned off, the fans stay on for about a half an hour, then automatically shut off. Is this possible? If yes, what will I need?

If necessary, I can post a link to the schematics for the amp, although I'm trying to keep from modifying the amp as much as possible.

Hi,
It is possible to do, but you need the Raspberry PI forum, not the arduino to accomplish this with your controller.

Figured I'd ask here, assuming I'd be better off going with an arduino than with the RPI haha

Hi,
Yes the arduino would be able to do it.
What are the fan specs.

Would you plan to have the arduino powered continuosly/separate from the amp? Or are you going for a complete automated shutdown after say a half hour delay?

Why don't you use a NO (normally open) thermostat (clixon) in series with the fans. e.g. ~45 deegrees C.

Then the fans turn on when the amp gets above 45C, and the fans stay on untill the amp has cooled down below 40C.

It is logical to use, and maybe you can use sth like timer switches or sth like that?
