Might be a bridge too far just now. I'm trying to focus on the challenge of motor controllers and relays, which I've still not solved.

I think the best thing is to get your hands on some basic hardware, motor driver, a relay module, occupancy sensor of some kind. Then begin to do some experiments. It will bring practical insights to your planning.
