Controlling multiple lights wirelessly and voice activated

Hi, this might seem very simple but I am very much a beginner.
I need to create a series of wireless handheld lights, each controlled via one microphone with different voice commands. It's for an interactive play. I'm not sure if I should use a master writer/slave receiver configuration or if I should try to adapt something like a home-automation project using Bluetooth like this: DIY Voice Controlled Home Automation with Arduino and Bluetooth.
The lights are for audience members, so there would need to be a good number of them.
If someone could point me in the right direction that would be great!

Voice commands are very difficult. You can buy hobby modules and train them to recognize seven or so words, for one speaker. There is no guarantee that they will work for other speakers, though.

Voice independent speech recognition is much, much more difficult and requires access to much higher power computers than Arduino.

Consider using button box handhelds, which are available for large numbers of participants and are typically used in classrooms for collecting student responses to interactive lectures.

Make it happen like N*sync did. ..
