convert mega 2560 to 5v input

Hi all,
just after some confirmation please.
I want to convert my Mega R3 to 5v input only.
Can I just solder a couple of pin headers to the input/output pins
of the LM1117 vreg and connect a shunt when I want to use 5v in
only?
Or should I pull, with delicacy of course, the lm1117 from the board
completely and permanently solder a bridge across the input/output
pads?

Yes. Add a diode from output (anode) to input (cathode) to avoid reverse driving the regulator, otherwise it may be damaged the next time you do want to use it.

Another option is to provide power via the USB connector.
