Converting 24v to 12v

Hi, is there any way to convert 24v dc voltage to 12v?
I have a 24v dc power supply and I hope I could utilize this voltage to get 12v dc without having to buy another commercial power supply.
Please help me.

In theory, the cheapest way would be to use a 7812 voltage regulator. Choose the right package depending on the current you draw.
But it may be cheaper (US$5?) to just buy a 12V power supply (500mA?).

I see, thanks a lot.
Is it ok to just use only LM7812?
Do I need capacitors mounted to input and output pin of LM7812?
I've been told that I need to put capacitors since it would oscillate periodically or all the time.

According to the datasheet

you don't need extra components, but it seems it's a good practice to have some decoupling capacitors after (100nF + 10uF) especially if you have switching ICs.

Thank you very much.

You didn't mention how much current you are drawing. Keep in mind you are dissipating have the power across the regulator. Unless you are using a heatsink or a fan I would not dissipate more the 1W in a TO-220 package. Going from 24V to 12V that would be around 80mA.
