Correct hardware for project?

This is my first project and I would like to get the right tools. The following video clearly shows what I will need and how to achieve my goals and I would like to know if the following items are correct:

• IR Receiver: Vishay Photodiode IR Receiver 38khz TSOP4838 for sale online | eBay

• LED Emitter: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3mm-5mm-940nm-Infrared-Diode-LED-IR-Emission-and-Receiver-for-Arduino-New-/172515165666?var=&hash=item282ab485e2:m:mSNxjcxPabZEMgDOOuCrfkA

Many thanks for your help!

Some IR receivers/transmitters are 38Khz some are 36Khz, you would need to match the frequency to that of the heater unit.

See this reference for IR references.

.

Good point.

It's actually for an A/C unit, and I can't find any information so I suppose I'll have to buy both.

If you don't mind waiting on China shipping you can get a clone Uno for less than 1/2 the price of that one:
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/291641465585
That is an SMD Uno so, unlike the one you're considering, you can't change the microcontroller chip if it gets damaged but at that price you could just buy a whole replacement board and not have to deal with pulling the chip, inserting a new one, and burning the bootloader (or paying extra for a chip with bootloader installed).

The thing other than a lower price that I like about the one from China is it's an honest clone. The one you're looking at is a counterfeit board. It being counterfeit instead of clone doesn't imply a quality difference but it's kind of scuzzy business practices. Made in Italy my ass! You might actually be able to get a free Arduino out of it. Buy the counterfeit then after you receive it send the seller a message that you found out it's a counterfeit. They may well give you a full refund just to stop you from reporting them to eBay and leaving negative feedback, which will cost them much more than the price of the Uno.

Thanks for the information.

I will get the authentic one.

But, it says "without cable", so that's another purchase..

I'm unsure which LED emitter I will need for this project (Fast Hacks #16 - Clone Infrared Signals with Arduino - YouTube) from the selection on the eBay auction, can anybody please advise?

LED on eBay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3mm-5mm-940nm-Infrared-Diode-LED-IR-Emission-and-Receiver-for-Arduino-New-/172515165666?

Well, I went for the "5mm 940nm Infrared Emitter" as it looked most like the one in the video. Unfortunately the seller couldn't confirm because they were based in China, where YouTube was blocked!
