Are you wanting to build such a home from scratch, or modify a home that you currently own? Do you have a license for such electrical work or do you have insurance on your home and does it allow such work?
Not I, nor anyone I know personally. IoT is just another entry point for hackers, and unreliable in the best cases.
First, I recommend that you choose a standard home automation protocol, whether you want to build some of it yourself or not.
I have a Z-Wave system with about 10 controlled lights & outputs, plus a programmable hub that automatically turns-on my outside lights at night, etc. I'm not set-up to control things over the Internet or cell network, but that could be added.
I only built one small part of it. For many years before I got Z-Wave I had an X-10 system (X-10 is now pretty-much obsolete).
There a couple of reasons for choosing an existing standard -

It's almost impossible to build something like this dimmer switch that fits in place of a regular light switch, works manually or remotely, and doesn't require any rewiring. Plus, you probably can't build it for the price you can buy it.

If you want to add a switch or controlled outlet, etc., later you can just order it instead of spending time to build and test it.
A recommendation is a separate VLAN for IoT, firewalled. Which... most people have.
Maybe OP means smart home. Ok, from my point of view it doesn't make much difference, but there are lot of people that like to have everything "connected".
If you have a look at Home Assistant forum, you see people paying $2k extra for dishwasher that connects. Bed pressure sensors to detect person in bed, connected toilets etc.. Someone spends a week to hack chinese electric toothbrush BLE communication...

Hi @hussain960. Have you taken a look at the Arduino Cloud IoT service? You might find it to be useful for some IoT projects.
There is an overview here:
+1 for HomeAssistant, running on a dedicated mini PC or first just on your laptop. HA is a good stepping-stone for home automation. You can keep it fully off the internet, or not. Connect/control devices you already have in the house, like smart TVs and smartbulbs, pull weather off the internet, and add your own Arduino wireless devices like temperature/humidity sensors, LCD dashboards and much more.

Personally, I think there's a long way to go on houses to make them "smarter".
As I get older, I want things to run in the background and be helpful.
I already monitor temperatures etc. using Arduino and Zigbee locally, i.e. not connected beyond the house. It helps me watch for water leaks etc.
I also use Sonoff devices for connection further afield. After a bike ride put me in A&E, I remembered I had left the boiler draining, expecting to return. Now the boiler has a main cut-off switch available through eWelink and the phone.
Sonoff also allowed me to monitor a terminally ill close friend, by checking temperatures, lights etc.
Engine management units have revolutionised vehicles, yet we don't do the same where we live.
It would nave been nice if the very expensive AEG unconnected washing machine had warned me that it was about to fail before I filled it up with washing.
Having tried all the Google ways to open it and guessing that a 32-A MCB had tripped was terminal, I had no choice but to break my way in.
Whether IOT would have helped, I don't know, but it might have.
Loaded with electronics and very heavy, I'd hate to think that some cheap component failing caused all that grief. Won't be buying another one.
No need to be "connected" to do that. Some blinking LED would be enough. ![]()
To my opinion connected appliances don't offer enough value yet, waiting for next generation. Another problem is proprietary apps and cloud, you never know when they stop working. There are still very few manufacturers that offer "local" control.
I would be happy to buy a laundry machine that I can program locally how I want, every step, and save (and maybe even share) the program.
More than once I've thought about taking total control of things like washing machines, put in an Arduino, write the code, make it fixable, keep spares
Nothing but brute force was going to get this thing open and believe me, I tried.
The real awfulness is not being able to fix it, but got a nice glass bowl, door, a stainless steel planter, drum, and a nice 3 phase induction motor, very classy.
I remember from my washing machine repair days that some had a door unlock pull wire behind the lid of the pump filter.
But back to HomeAutomation. I was surprised how many devices it already did detect in my house that I could already control without writing any code.
Just install HA (free) on the PC/laptop and try.

Regards the washing machine, I did do a lot of searching before deciding on the nuclear option.
I run the machine overnight, so didn’t see what happened.
It must have happened when it started from a delayed start. The fault was serious enough to take out a 32-A MCB.
There’s a lot of electronics to go wrong. There were about 8 MOSFETs on a heat sink.
As it was the second machine to fail – the other caught fire – I decided no more WMs and now do stuff by hand and use a much more efficient spin drier.
No electronics in the spin drier.
A lot of stuff now is a curse. An LG monitor failed. I took it apart and found a small hotspot on a PCB. They had used rows of solder as a heat sink for a regulator. It had melted the solder.
Countless heating controls have failed. Big names like Honeywell. LED dimmers, occupancy sensors. Transformerless power supplies.
If you can do things yourself, you are in the driving seat.
Not a Samsung machine by any chance.
They had a recall a few years back after several models caught fire.
My son was one of the unlucky ones, with a burned down laundry.

I would agree about the usefulness.
The Sonoff devices have a local control option. I've been pleased with them overall, but there are quality issues and they don't seem to understand DST.
As for the washing machine, they have a lot of features and program choices, but you have to have what's on offer. Sometimes a rinse and spin would be useful but it isn't an option (AEG/Electrolux Lavalogic). For reasons best known to the machine, it always says the moisture level is 42%. Never varies.
If I were designing a WM, I'd have the a minimum in the white box, motor, drum, heater etc, and put a control panel on the wall, maybe a PLC. Separate bulk dispensers for detergents etc.
Make up your own programs and select or plug in the USB stick.
Try Shelly, it takes local control options to another level. Out of the box.
And quality is better as well, not to forget real certifications.
