Create Distance Sensor field?

Hello.

I am trying to make a field that narrow and about 30ft long.
so I need to get a distance of a certain range (30ft aprox.)
it doesn't has to be precisely accurate, but I would like to generate at least 5 to 10 steps, so I can set the range.

not the way of IR cam above the field right now..

I was going to use distance range sensor, but it seems works better with close distance. Any ideas to make 30th long range with sensors?

other than distance sensor?

When you posted this I thought "Would the frequency antenna of a Theremin work if 30ft long?" and "How far from this wire would you be able to detect a person or object?"
