Creating a Replica Drum Machine Enclosure - Best Approach?

Hey there, I've been researching and attempting to wrap my head around the ideal way to re-create an E-MU SP-12 / 1200 enclosure casing. The idea is to make a blank and then screen graphics directly to the surfaces.

I am going to build a vacuum forming table soon and figured this might be the best approach for this. I could make a 1:1 replica plug out of wood and simply form sheets over that. Would like to make 10+ at some point so a method I can repeat easily, and cheaply, would be great.

Now, I haven't tested out vf'ing personally (varying sheet thicknesses) so I have to wonder will I be able to get enough wall thickness from this method to ensure the casing is rigid enough. It's roughly 20"x20"x6" so that's quite an internal void. Maybe a metal baseplate will solve this; maybe some bracing.

The original SP casing is an extremely hard plastic / fibreglass-like material so it's very rigid. And of course has moulded ridges and footings inside to provide extra strength and places to screw into.

Vacuum forming seems like an ideal approach mainly because of how easy it is; little mess.

Am I barking up the right tree? Maybe there are other options I should be checking out?

Thanks!
