Curve Turn or Diagonal Turn, Which one is faster?

I am trying to build a micromouse. My question is when i turn a corner, i have two option, to follow an arc, or, to turn 45 degree then move 1/2 diagonal unit and then turn 45 degree again. Which of these options will be logically faster?

This is what I am talking about.

The result depends on real life, for example, how much the wheels slip.

Well considering that no slipping occurs in ideal situation what will be faster?

Wheels ALWAYS slip. Build a mouse and experiment to learn more.

Have a look at

There was some talk about corner strategies.

I would think that the two 45 degree would be "logically" faster

Of course a straight line is always the shortest. Imagine pulling a string tight between the start & stop points.

But if you drive a car or ride a bicycle you know that you can't instantly change directions and if you were on a race track it you might be able to make a straight line once you've changed directions but you would have to turn-and turn-out of the connected straights. It depends on your speed and the cornering forces that you can get without skidding.

Thanks everyone

Do you drive a car? Test yourself on a 45 degree corner. You can maintain the straight line speed as you enter the corner if you drive in a curve, but cannot maintain the speed if you make TWO corners out of the one corner.

Unfortunately i am yet 17

The watch the next high speed racing on TV. See how NONE of the drivers make corners that match the road surface.

Outstanding video! Note that problem of wheel slip and friction are extensively discussed beginning around 18 minutes in.

Oh yes!! Now i understand, so i will prefer curve turns when possible.

Never turn.

Well yes, that mecanum wheel sure is impressive, but considering how many sensors i have to put on board just for the mouse to detect walls, is a lot.

A mono-wheel. A servo for direction with a dc motor driving a wheel... but I don't know if there are any sliprings of RC car size.
