Custom DB9 connector

Hey guys, this is somewhat of an odd request but i figured this would be the best place. Im in process of trying to move my project over to my own custom PCB. In do so however, im looking for right angle DB9 connector that doesnt have tabs on the side for securing a cable into the port and also looking for a longer connector tip.

The connector is for plugging INTO a sega-genesis controller port (female db9 pcb mounted) and the controller ports are not quite the same as a standard DB9 connector. Seems they are a bit deeper. Also the side tabs for connecting cables obviously cant be there and the plug that connects needs to have more depth.

Anyone have any suggestions?! Maybe site i can take a look at? Ive looked at digikey and a couple others but ive had no success. Am i looking for a unicorn basically?

Yep. Does Digikey really list them incorrectly as a "DB9" connector? That would be a poor show.

The game ports were designed to fit an all-plastic (PVC) moulded connector on the end of a cable with no locking mechanism (other than the elasticity of the plastic moulding). You really are pushing stuff uphill to make something different. Why?

Connectivity plain and simple. Clipping ends off junk controllers and then having to wire them into a custom designed pcb seems silly... Yes the connector would work but im looking for something that eliminates the wires and directly connects to the system through a connector that will fit properly.

If i truly am looking for something that doesn't exist, do you or anyone else have any suggestions other than what i stated above. I guess i can modify connectors but i am looking to make quite a few pcbs here and not just one or two.

a link or photo would be nice.

OK!

I might add that the clever trick was to get just the DE-9 "solder tail" connector - without the housing - and put a connector pattern on the PCB with pads on alternate sides so that the connector itself pushes onto the PCB edge and solders to the pads.

One of these:

^^^ Doesnt work...

connectors are too short, barely make contact and will easily pull out of the console with hardly any force. As you stated before, and the obvious picture shows they are all plastic without latching/locking mechanism. Common now m8, get it together...

I think you're looking for ATARI joystick port DE9 plugs? They were custom made for joysticks back in the 80s and 90s and it seems they are no longer made. I was looking for them a while ago for a joystick conversion project but couldn't find any. The only option seems to be to salvage them from old, preferably broken joysticks…

I'd be inclined to buy the db9 plugs and do the some modification. Those two side tags do more than just hold the plug in place. The metal shell is in two parts that are rivetted together at the holes. So if you cut those ears off, the whole plug falls to pieces.

You could make a new metal shell by simply wrapping some sheet metal (maybe a recycled pop can) around a former and a bit of persuasion from a mallet and other tools for fine tuning it's contours. With a bit of forethought you could include some extentions to mount it to your board.

You KNOW someone in China has a go-down producing these!!!

I finally found the right search phrase. Put...

sega joystick cable

.. into eBay's search. Worst case, buy some extension cables, and cut the unwanted end off.

He knows that. He doesn't want to.

How about this one (click to follow link):

You could consider clipping the excess plastic part off of it, without the part falling apart so it seems.
This one has solder pins, so no cups to insert wires, and you'll still have some trouble getting some cover on it.

Yes it does seem silly but if it's something you can buy off eBay for $8 including shipping then it is silly to buy a $12 connector from DigiKey.

The 'silliest' thing I ever did was back when the smallest, cheapest heatsink I could get at my local electronics shop was 85 cents. I took a 50-cent coin (a big coin) and drilled a hole in the middle to make a heatsink.

Thanks!! This is 90 percent what im looking for. I can modify the side pieces a little bit but this might just do!

Karma added btw!

Thank you! Just ordered one of these:
