The others are larger so two or three times the width becomes quite cumbersome. And there are far fewer "shields" for the NodeMCU and ESP32, and shields are generally intended to be stacked for compactness.
The single module you show is not really a "base" but a protoboard to be mounted either below or above - as is available for UNOs and such.
There are also perfboard based breakout boards that specifically take an ESP8266, without the WeMOS or NodeMCU overhead. Turn it around and you find the footprint of an ESP32.
