Daisy Chaining items

Im looking for a way to take a set of boxes with various sensors and daisy chain them together back to a main control box/information box so i dont need to run masses of cables from each box back to the other. Im a newbie and would like any advice.
The boxs may have lights,temp sensors etc in each or just one or two items.

Any help would be great.
I want to keep the cost down to a minimum.

What is the distance involved here, this is crucial to selecting a solution that works.
Also do you need two way communication?

It will only be a few feet maximum of 1 meter something like that.
