DC Water pump

Hello,

I am currently planning on making a mini water cannon but I still want to water o be pumped quite far. I need to find a water pump what I can use with the adafruit motor shield and arduino. This is what I have found so far:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Micro-Cooling-Brushless-Water-Waterproof/dp/B00BXVQ496/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1376064888&sr=8-13&keywords=dc+water+pump

Could somebody help me and tell me if this will give me a good distance of spray and if the current and voltage are ok. Or could you reccomend and good mini ater pump to use (preferably to buy in the uk).

Many Thanks

Jamie

As far as voltage and amperage go it looks fine to me, but please post a link to your motor driver shield.

As far as spray distance I have know idea how far it goes. The design of your cannon will influence how far the water will shoot.

Hello,

Thank youvery much for your reply. He is the link to the shield: Adafruit Motor/Stepper/Servo Shield for Arduino kit [v1.2] : ID 81 : $19.50 : Adafruit Industries, Unique & fun DIY electronics and kits

For the spray distance im guessing the thinner the pipe the bigger the pressure making it go further?

Many Thanks

Jamie

With only 9.7ft of head developed by the pump, I doubt it will spray very far.

The size and shape of the nozzle are critical to converting pressure into velocity. I presume Google can point you at suitable information.

The nozzle should be the only narrow part or you will suffer friction losses in the pipe. The size of the pipe won't change the pressure (except to reduce it through friction). The pump is the part that increases the pressure.

This 9.7ft head pump is ~3PSI. It uses an impeller to pump the water and you want a "diaphragm pump" for higher pressure.

Don't believe that 80 PSI rating though; this is probably 35 PSI. The most common use I am aware of would be on an electric sprayer:

These are made to be able to spray the tops of fruit trees so you can expect maybe 6 meters of height.

kind of bulky, but is fairly high pressure for the price.

Edit: a simple google search finds pages like below that might be of use.

Hello,

Thank you all so much for your replys. I need the pump to be releatively cheap, small in size ( small enough to fit on a robot and have a decent amount of range. So could anybody recommend me one please but again thank you for the recommendations so far.

Many Thanks

Jamie

What about a windscreeen-washer pump? Many of them easily wet the car behind

Actually thats not a bad idea. I may look into that  Thanks

Rock Auto sells them really cheap; just note that with automobiles, there are a ton of different makes and models for all parts, so finding a "standard" pump is an impossibility. You might be better off going to an auto-recyling/salvage/pick-ur-part place...

Of course, lots are available on ebay. - Scotty
