Debugging ADM1602k LCD Display

I've hooked up the lcd to my arduino assuming I did it correctly. I followed this tutorial(link in bottom) and I followed all the steps. The only part I think that might giving my LCD trouble is the contrast setting. It says that pin 3 on the LCD controls the contrast, so I used a 10k potentiometer and that didnt work and I tried to use various resistors set to pin 3 to see if that would change the contrast but nothing. First of all, this was my assumption after uploading the code and it not working that the problem the contrast.
